Since I am the type to make up their own rules I have written my own lore for my own fantasy creatures. I have decided to post it here for anyone to use as they see fit. No, you may not use my characters that are involved in my dragon kingdom( such as the king, queen, their children, the elders, etc) but you're free to use it as a guide or inspiration into helping you make your own dragon character. If you do use this I would love to see what you make!

just like with my faeries all of this lore is free to use. Some lore is borrowed from dungeons and dragons.

The Dragon Lands
The dragon lands stretch along the entire Eastern coast and parts of the Northern lands of their continent bordering many kingdoms including the demon realm, Crystal Kingdom, Vampires and the wild mountains where many animal demons inhabit. The Western border is made up entirely of thick mountain ranges and volcanoes that stretch into the north and bleed into the winter Northern Mountains. Oceans cover part of the north and East coast and a vast desert occupies the South leaving the Dragons with many natural defenses against enemies.

  History

The Dragon lands were not always a safe place to be. Before El's take over the land was ruled by a tyrannical red dragon king. This man was greedy and cared little for his people. He would take bribes from hunters and give them free range to take the hide from any dragon they saw fit.

Beneath his nose a rebel army formed. This army was lead by El, Iso and their Father. The war was long and very difficult many lives were lost including their Father and Iso's son.  The seemingly never ending war had finally come to an end with El as the victor.

When it was all over and the old king's castle was turned to nothing but rubble a Faerie woman named Mei managed to sneak through the mountains and into the war ravaged valley. There was much distrust between fae and dragon at first, but she helped heal the wounded anyways. then, offered her services to rebuild the kingdom and restore the land to it's former beauty.

As time went on her relationship with El grew and eventually they were married. New laws were formed and , because of the high number of orphaned dragons, the tradition of  calling the King and Queen Mother and Father dragon came about.



The Dragon Castle


The dragon castle, which was built after El's take over, is located in the mountain side. It was carved out of the very mountains and rests on top of massive plateau with several different caverns beneath . The castle is cylindrical in design with color coded hallways that offshoot and lead to different portions of the castle. The upper levels hold rooms for the royal family and honored guests [ friends of the royal family, elders, ] the middle has the ballrooms , throne room , music room, dining room, kitchen and other rooms that are shared among the castle residents and the lower levels are for guests,servants  and other miscellaneous rooms.

The plateau the castle sits on contains Mei's massive gardens and cherry blossom tree forest. The training grounds are on the opposite side of the gardens, then the hot springs are where the land begins bleeding into the volcanic mountains [where El also has his private hot spring]

The caverns have multiple uses. They are made up of winding tunnels that lead into various larger pockets. The largest acts like a maternity ward for dragon mothers. It provides a safe place for Mothers to lay and care for their eggs and new borns after they hatch until they are ready to leave with them and start life within the village.

There is also the crystal cavern which is as its name describes, a cavern with one large crystal in the center and many more smaller crystals in the walls. This place has other smaller caves where guests sensitive to light are allowed to sleep and people El really doesn't like. Any prisoners that happen are typically stuck there to be kept under watch

And beneath the caverns, deep underground is El's horde of treasure. The only way to get there or find it rather is if he WANTS you to. Other than that there is no way to get into his horde.

Dragon Culture

Aside from calling their rules Mother and Father , dragon society is different from others in a number of ways. First of all, nudity is not much of an issue there. It is not uncommon to see men and women sharing a hot spring naked together or just overall being naked before each other. It's not considered shameful or sexual. Simply natural.

It is also common for dragons to openly swing all ways. Meaning pansexuality is a common trait among them. Most will mate with the opposing gender for the sake of reproducing and some will also have at least one lover. Which means polyamory is not an uncommon practice.

Scars are also considered a mark of honor and thus beautiful in a dragon's eye. They see it as a mark of strength since, no matter the scar, means that the person overcame a difficult obstacle in their life or survived a severe injury.


Dragon Gifts


Earning a gift from a dragon means that they consider you to be their kin. Someone they will be as loyal to as a hound and HIGHLY protective of. It is an incredibly unwise move to even threaten anyone that a dragon has welcomed into their heart.


One gift would be taking a person to their horde and giving them a piece of their treasure. A treasure piece gifted is one that will never die even if the dragon does. This is a measure of deep trust since dragons are renown hoarders and guard their treasure with their life.


Another is giving their live scales. Live scales from a dragon are ones that are not the dead ones that come off during molting. These are ones still with all their shine and color, plucked right off their hide! It can be a little painful for a dragon ( the feeling is similar to having a hair plucked from your body) and is a sign of endearing friendship. They can be used in powerful potions and to enchant armor, weapons, summon the dragon and make the hardest chain mail armor known in the lands.  


The gifting of horns is the highest honor a dragon can give besides revealing the name of their soul to another. not all dragons shed their horns, but if you befriend on that does and they give them to you. It means you are truly very special to them. Typically these are saved for mates, but others can receive this honor as well. The horns can be melted/crafted by the dragon forge and ONLY the dragon forge to create lightweight, powerful weaponry that resonates with the dragons very essence, brilliant armor pieces and even woven into the fine stronger than diamond silk with elemental immunity (the element depends on the dragon). And jewelry.

Social Structure

Dragons do not focus too heavily on social structure. Yes, they have their King and Queen, Mother and Father Dragon and their children who would be the princes and princess, but it's not heavily weighed. Instead of nobles they have elders. The elders are the oldest of their dragon type (normally 1000+ in age) and then everyone else.


 Molting
Every year,twice a year, all dragons go through a molting process. It happens once in the fall and once in the spring. During this time they lose around 30-40% of their scales to make room for fresh ones to grow in.
When molting season hits the dragons frequent the hot springs. The hot mineral water helps loosen the scales making them easier to pluck off. One can tell which scales to remove and which ones not to because they turn a dull solid grey in color. On dragons with grey scales ( silver, iron, grey) they turn black. The dead scales can be used in some potions, but are best suited as fertilizer for the earth due to them being very rich in nutrients.


at age 100, when a dragon becomes and adult, they will go through a much larger mating process in which they will shed 100% of their scales and even the skin of their wings will shed and horns will grow causing them to flake. This can be a very miserable and painful time for the dragon. Even the most docile of dragons will become temperamental.


After this the big molt is every 300-500 years depending on dragon type. There are some that will even shed their horns at this age! This is so if a horn breaks or becomes chipped, cracked, or otherwise damaged they can grow a new pair. Not ALL dragons shed their horns. It is mostly the more warrior class dragons or ones that tend to have antlers, Gold, Iron, Forest, Time (more can be thought of later)


Mating

When a dragon obtains a mate a bond is formed between the two with a blood exchange and trading of their soul names. Each dragon has a soul name unique to its own self that is obtained upon birth (the mother sings it to the infant dragon before giving them a common name). Said name is not a particular grouping of words, but rather comes in the form of a song. Knowing this name gives his or her mate the ability to truly do severe damage to them. If sung in a mean and hateful manner it can drive the dragon to near suicide, but in a loving tender manner it can lift the dragon's spirits beyond the stars.

Other Forms

Most Dragons can obtain a human like form[naturally there are exceptions to this]. In their human form they retain their horns and some of their inhuman features. Some can opt to learn how to hide their features, but most choose not to simply because they are very proud to be a dragons.   Some will have patches of scales on various parts of their body and most will have a stripe going down starting at the back of their neck following their spine to their tail bone.

On average most dragon Females are around 6ft in height and males average around 7ft. Some may be taller and others shorter. Female dragon horns also tend to be smaller than the male's depending on dragon type and age.







Festivals


The Cherry Blossom Festival
This festival starts in the spring when all the cherry blossom trees are in full bloom. During this time people gather in the town square.  Bakers put their goods on the line in a pie contest to see who makes the best pie and cooks enter their best flame roasted food for judging.


The Butterfly Festival

This occurs in the early days of summer when the dragon flowers bloom. The blossoms are vibrantly color hibiscus like flowers with red tipped thorns and leaves that look like a dragon's wings and stamen that have a serpentine appearance.  Butterflies of all sorts flock to the dragon realm during this time and the dragons celebrate it to signify new life and beginning.


The Feast of Fools.


This occurs at the start of Spring ( April Fools Day) and is equivalent to Mardi Gras where people drink, dance, gorge on food and make merry. It's a day for mischief and one that the Father of dragons tends to escape from.

Harvest Festival

During the fall harvest all the dragons get together to give thanks for bringing in the fall's harvest. The entire kingdom (royals included) gather in the town square and bring their best cooking and share in the bounty the land has bestowed upon them.

Day the of the Dead

It's where they honor their ancestors and those that came before them. it's a day of remembrance with a touch of mischief. Children will sometimes dress up and the villagers will hand out treats.


Yule

During winter . It's the season of giving gifts. There's trees, a yule log, feasting and warm ale by the fire.





Chromatic

Black Dragons
Breath Weapon: Acid
Preferred Treasure: Shiny coins
Magic: Shadow/illusion
Notes: Black dragons are known for being at both ends of the spectrum. Some are ill tempered and absolutely vile while others ( still having a dragon's temper) are known to be incredibly intelligent especially in math, language and a VERY rare few can obtain healing abilities.


Blue Dragons
Breath Weapon: Water
Preferred Treasure: Sapphires and other blue gems
Magic: Water/illusion
Notes: Blue dragons are known to be just as intelligent as some black dragons ( if not more depending on the dragon you're asking) and are of the aquatic race. Most do not have wings, but rather fins and more amphibian like skin compared to scales and gils to allow them to breath under water.

Green Dragons
Breath Weapon: Noxious fog
Preferred Treasure:  they like to keep small animals as pets and natural crystals
Magic: Earth based
Notes: Green dragons can grow to be some of the largest and are known for being the most wise. They tend to stick to themselves and are normally found slumbering within the ancient forest of the dragon lands. Unlie most dragons basic Greens RARELY obtain a human form.

Red Dragons
Breath Weapon: Fire
Preferred Treasure: any kind of money
Magic: Fire
Notes: red dragons are known to have tempers as fiery as the  volcanoes they live near. They are known to enjoy a good magma bath and can be compared to a walking space heater.  They are master traders and hagglers taking to working well as accountants of salesmen.

White Dragons
Breath Weapon: holy Aura
Preferred Treasure: any holy relic or artifact
Magic: Holy barriers/telepathy
Notes: White dragons are known for being the opposite to the black. However, while they appear angelic some may be to the contrary. Many will use their angelic appearance to gain the upper hand with people while others could simply care less. They tend to stick to a more frost like climate or underwater anywhere they will not be bothered.


Brown Dragons
Breath Weapon: Sand blast
Preferred Treasure: scorpions
Magic: none
Notes: Brown dragons are one of the lower class dragons. They have no wings and act more like giant dogs than an actual ancient beast. Most rarely talk and prefer to live in the desert, though some are kept as companions to other higher class dragons.


Purple Dragon
Breath Weapon: Energy based
Preferred Treasure: trinkets with value gemstones
Magic: Energy/aura attacks
Notes: Purple dragons are known for supernatural healing abilities. Some are channeled as the dragon kingdom's mediums and fortune tellers while others rank with nobility and chose to not socialize as they do not wish to be bothered.




Metallic

Brass Dragon
Breath Weapon:  Sleeping gas OR Fire
Preferred Treasure:  Handcrafted artworks
Magic: None
Notes: Brass dragons are known to be more of the artisans of the dragon realm. Some will also act as mercenaries and guards. They are known for having a supreme amount of agility thanks to their double jointed wings that can come down to form a V shape.  They love to write and create beautiful works of poetry and ballades for those willing to listen. Some are known to be the very romantic type.

Bronze Dragon
Breath Weapon: paralyzing gas
Preferred Treasure:  Ceremics and statues
Magic: forging
Notes: Bronze dragons are known to be the weapon smiths of the dragon realm and some act as lower class warriors or knights. They are loyal to a fault at times and are always willing to fight for what they believe in. Some are known to be rather arrogant ( by dragon standards) or as they like to call it, confident.

Copper Dragon
Breath Weapon:  Acid or numbing Gas
Preferred Treasure: Gears, clockwork, puzzles, precious metals
Magic: Puzzle and illusionary magic
Notes: Copper dragons are renown puzzle masters. Their lairs are often incredibly complex labyrinths that only they, themselves, know to navigate. Some are known to be rather clever even dabbling in sorts of trickster or prankster magic , though that is typically only in the younger Copper dragons. Usually a Copper dragon will try to be more diplomatic when it comes to combat, only choosing to fight if there is no other choice.


Gold Dragon
Breath Weapon: Fire or weakening gas
Preferred Treasure: Gold, gemstones, art and sculptures.
Magic: None
Notes: Gold dragons are the true warrior class of dragons. They are often riddled with rippling muscle and the born knowledge of tact. They are masters at battle planning and warfare able to take down their enemy with the smallest amount of men or causalities possible. They pride themselves in their strength and will rarely back down when duty calls.

Silver Dragon
Breath Weapon:  Frost
Preferred Treasure: fine fabrics or jewelery
Magic: shape shifting/illusionary/healiing
Notes: silver dragons are the most magical of all dragons and also the most elusive. It is said that they are of nothing more than legend now thanks to the tyrant king of old. Some still believe one is around, but have yet to fine them.



Gem

Amethyst Dragons
Breath Weapon: Force Push
Preferred Treasure: Geodes and other natural treasures                      
Magic:  camouflage/spirit
Notes: Amethyst dragons are some of the more diplomatic dragons often acting as advisers tot he king or his noblemen. They often go on diplomatic missions to help from alliances and treaties among the other creatures of the magical realm. They prefer to avoid conflict, but will bear their fangs if they must


Crystal Dragon
Breath Weapon: Blinding light
Preferred Treasure: Quartz , other crystals and handmade sentimental gifts
Magic: Ice/winter magic
Notes: Despite their cold nature and preference for cold climates Crystal Dragons are known to be some of the warmest of their kind. Most are generally welcoming of any newcomer who does not intend on bringing them harm. They have a love for young ones, usually taking on the role of den mother( for the females) to help new mothers with their hatchlings and occasionally are healers. Some may also have a bit of a tendency towards pulling harmless pranks on those they know well. These are usually few and far between but even an old dragon can have a mischievous side.

Emerald Dragons
Breath Weapon:  Powerful burst of wind
Preferred Treasure: Books on ancient history and culture
Magic: forest
Notes:  Emerald dragons are more reclusive than their other brothers and sisters preferring to live alone, sometimes outside of the kingdom. They tend to act more as assassins, preferring to attack an enemy by ambush rather than head on.

Sapphire Dragon
Breath Weapon:  deafening sound
Preferred Treasure: instruments from all cultures
Magic: water/sound
Notes: Sapphire dragons are the most musically inclined, some knowing how to play a large host of instruments. They are often mistaken for blue dragons. Unlike blues they have wings and scales . While some ill have underwater lairs, others prefer tropical islands to dwell or sometimes fresh underwater caves.



Special Class


Fire Dragon
Breath Weapon:  Fire
Preferred Treasure: anything that strikes them as beautiful
Magic: Fire/able to turn into living flame and bend fire
Notes: Fire dragons are noted for their bright orange and yellow scales often tipped with black. They can transform into living flame and even bed fire to create trinkets. A gift from a fire dragon is of the highest honor. It means they are giving you their trust.  To the opposite sex it's a means of courting.


Magma Dragon
Breath Weapon: Magma
Preferred Treasure:  ancient relics/any black gem
Magic: belching out magma
Notes: magma dragons are characterized by ill tempers and their black and red spackled scales. They live in active volcanoes, sometimes causing them to go dormant and generally stay away from people. They can literally belch magma from their mouths and sometimes aide in creating islands with the water breathers.

Faerie Dragon
Breath Weapon: faerie dust (effects unknown)
Preferred Treasure: rare flowers and plants
Magic: illusion/flower/trickery
Notes: Faerie dragons, like silver, are known to be nothing more than legend. They are the result of when a faerie and dragon mate. This is a random factor and even after many children a faerie dragon may still not be produced. Unlike normal dragons they have large butterfly wings instead of leathery ones, they are the smallest of their kind taking on the size of maybe a kitten and generally have large eyes. They have a tendency for mischief, though anything they do is harmless unless you anger them.  

Frost Dragons
Breath Attack: wintery Blast
Preferred Treasure: Diamonds , Gold and Silver
Magic: ice/frost
Notes: Frost Dragons and dragons of the winter. They are cold hearted by  nature and even cruel. May dragons say their hearts are literally made of ice and had long since stopped beating. They will take mates only for the sole purpose of reproduction , not love or or any other reason beyond. If one ever does manage to melt the thick shield of ice around their hearts they will find the most dedicated and loving of all dragons beneath. It's not an impossible task, but incredibly
difficult.


Prismatic Dragon[light]

Forest Dragons
Breath Attack:  Poison Gas
Preferred Treasure:  Seeds or seedlings of rare or exotic plants
Magic: Forest/Earth
Notes: Forest dragons are patient, calm beings that resonate with spiritual strength. They are peace loving dragons, making them the peace makers and mediators of the dragon realm. Fighting is something they enjoy, but they will protect those they claim as their kin if one dares to harm them. They are nurturing parents and lovers, preferring balance and steadiness in their life. Routine is a big thing with them as , once they fall into one, become true creatures of habit.

Bone Dragon

Breath Attack:  Necrosis blast.
Preferred Treasure: rare bones, fossils, necromancy items
Magic:  necromancy
Notes:  Bone dragons are dragons of death and decay. Their form is entirely skeletal with some flesh hanging off the bones or otherwise sewn together. They have no pupils and some don't even have eyes! They are said to be cold and uncaring when really they are simply timeless and old. They live by sapping the life force from living beings.

Ghost Dragon

Breath Attack: Energy push
Preferred Treasure:  Souls of the living
Magic:  weakened variation of the souls they absorb.
Notes: Ghost dragons form when the restless souls of dragons combine into one being. They can be unpredictable and rather dangerous to be around. They thrive of absorbing more souls into their being, thus gaining power. They are prevented from gaining too much through funeral rites performed to sooth the spirit of the dying or deceased.  ]]

this is all subject to change. I may add more dragon types as they come to me and,yes, a lot of inspiration came from dungeons and dragons as far as the types go.
